Why check a QR code first

A QR code is just a link or a piece of text you cannot read with your eyes. Scammers stick fake QR codes on parking machines, restaurant tables and donation boxes, or send them in letters and emails pretending to be from banks, LHDN or courier companies. Scanning one can open a phishing page or send your payment to the wrong person.

Payment QR codes

For DuitNow and other payment QR codes, your banking app shows the payee name before you confirm. Read it every time. If you are paying a shop and the name is a person you do not recognise, stop and ask the cashier. Look at the sticker too: a QR code pasted over another one is a warning sign.

Links in QR codes

If the QR opens a website, check the domain before entering any details. Use our Scam Link Checker on the link, and the Domain Age Checker if the site is unfamiliar.

Never scan to log in

Do not scan a QR code that asks you to "verify" WhatsApp, Telegram or your bank. Linking a device by QR is a common way to take over accounts.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded?

No. The QR code is decoded by your own browser. The image never leaves your device.

Can a QR code hack my phone?

A QR code itself cannot run code. The danger is what it opens: a phishing page, an APK download, or a payment to a scammer.

How do I scan a QR code that is on my phone screen?

Take a screenshot and upload it here, or paste it with Ctrl+V on a computer.

It says no QR code was found. What now?

Crop the photo closer to the code, make sure it is in focus, and avoid glare. Very small or damaged codes may not decode.
